Florinef is a replacement therapy in order to treat salt-losing syndromes and adrenocortical insufficency. Florinef helps raise the body’s steroid hormone levels, if they get to low. Its main purpose is to raise the levels of a specific mineralocorticoid in order to promote low mineralocorticoid levels (netdoctor.co.uk). Florinef mimics the mineralocorticoid function in the body.
The usual dosage is 0.1 mg. It is normally administered with 10 mg to 37.5 mg of Acetate or hydrocortisone (10 mg to 30 mg in divided doses). Since it is a prescription, duration varies. (rxlist.com)
Possible side effects are sodium and water retention, swelling (edema), high blood pressure, headache, low potassium level, muscle weakness, fatigue, increased susceptibility to infection, impaired wound healing, increased hair growth, thinning of skin and stretch marks, disturbances of the gut (indigestion and ulcers), decreased bone density, insomnia, depression, weight gain, raised blood sugar level, changes in menstrual cycle, cataracts, glaucoma, intracranial pressure (netdoctor.co.uk).
Florinef-if used for long periods of time-may be taken with a potassium supplement (rxlist.com). Dietary salt restriction may be implemented if patient is on prolonged therapy (rxlist.com). Development of hypertension, edema, hypokalemia (low potassium levels), excessive weight increase and increase in heart size are signs of over dosage. Administration of the drug should be discontinued and symptoms will usually subside. Regular monitoring’s of blood pressure and serum electrolytes can help prevent over dosage (rxlist.com/florinef-drug/overdosage).
Patients should not be vaccinated due to hazards neurologically and a lack of antibody response. Elderly people should take Florinef acetate in extremely low doses in order to not stimulate any more side effects that are already present naturally. Children should be monitored very carefully and specifically should not be given to children who are on immunosuppressant drugs (rxlist.com). It is highly recommended to not take this drug while pregnant (rxlist.com).
